Once again we travelled down to Exmoor to see the red deer that we enjoy watching there most years.
We have found a spot where we consistently see red deer and i have managed to get pretty close on several occasions. The below pictures were taken with my new canon 300mm f4 and im pretty please with the results... still have several thousand photos to go through from the 3 day trip!
I much prefer deer watching on Exmoor to the new forest (just a short train ride away) or deer parks as the deer are truly wild and it is a challenge to see them and more so to photograph them. The rutting isn’t necessarily as good to watch from an action point of view but the males are much more territorial so you get a lot of roaring and often the larger stag chasing off young bucks. It's unusual to see two stags in the same meadow let alone two of an even size that are likely to clash.
Apologies for the low image quality, they look fuzzy to me on here probably as I had to shrink them down to 600x400 pixels to get them to upload. They look a lot better on flickr even if they are viewed at the same size

I'd imagine this is because on flickr I uploaded the full size versions.

I really like the contrast of colours in this picture.
Shame about the poor focus on the head in this one but im pleased with in none the less.
and much better focus on the head but not as a good a pose without the roaring .. good view of the antlers though.
hope you enjoy
