Hedgehog winter home

The hedgehog in our garden currently sleeps in the pampas grass. I am keen to keep him in the garden and offer food and water every night.
Is it worth investing in a hedgehog house or will he hibernate in the pampass grass?

It probably wouldn't hurt to invest in a hedgehog house, it all depends on how thick/extensive the pampas grass is, and whether the hedgehog will be able to survive a cold Winter in it. Do you know if it hibernated in there last Winter?

This is the first year I have seen a hog in our garden.
Do you know how much bedding and what type I would need? Is a box 15 inches square big enough?

I am attaching a link for the RSPB's website page on hedghogs. All you need to know about building a box is there (and lots more). I wouldn't worry about bedding, it will sort that out itself.

Thanks Gatekeeper. The houses do seem quite expensive though. I will have to shop around.
