Red Deer Rut - Suffolk

Just had a fantastic night out - no, not a trip to a pub or the cinema, went for a late evening drive along a nearby byway and decided to stop and just sit and see what we could hear. The moonlight was amazing, so parked and switched off the lights.... then heard it.... Red deer stag proclaiming his status (either that or the BBC was filming Autumn Watch and Simon King was doing his rutting stag impression). The moonlight was enough to be able to pick out the group of deer through normal binos, only about 75 -100m away on a big field. We counted about 42 in total and think there was a major stag and one younger chap hanging around on the edge of the group. It was absolutely thrilling! We sat and watched them for about an hour before there was a massive flash of lightning and a big rumble of thunder - this set the local pheasants off into a chorus of warning calls at which point the deer just melted into the nearby woods.....

What an evening!!!!!! I'm on such a high......

Sounds like a wonderful evening to me Chris. I`ve yet to hear/see the deer rut......one day

the ruts just starting here !! came across rannoch moor on thursday ,all the stags have split up ,getting frosty in the morning too ! should hear them roaring soon good idea is to download an mp3 of a stag's roar ,sit in a conventient layby and play it loud enough through the car stereo system ,but switch it off if they get too close!
