rats -help

hallo, only just discovered this ace site so i hope i do this right.
live in the country, field next door recently harvested, family of one adult, 4 baby rats seem to have moved in to our hedge. no fear to be out during day eating bird food - which i have now stopped. also heard scratching in living room wall couple of times recently to. my cat did kill a few when they lived in the field but seems to have lost interest. also rats are intimadating mice family out there - i know mice can be problem too but they never have to us, so happy to leave them. really dont want to kill rat family but at a loss what to do, any advice please?

You've done the right thing stopping the food. If you think you have rats actually in the house, best get a professional pest controller in sharpish - no need to get hysterical about the situation, but they're not nice to have living indoors.
