| | | Re: Bats social sounds The green crickets that come readily to light (and into houses then) are often oak bush crickets, speckled bush crickets can't fly but are often up trees and bushes.
Sorry for taking the thread away from bats and onto crickets Only relevant to bat detector waving

| | | Re: Bats social sounds Last night I was sat outside watching my Batty. And didnt see him/her but right over the top of our heads, close to our house we could hear very high pitched PIIP PIIIP PIIP PIIIP - ear piercing - actually hurt my ears (I am 22, so suppose I can still hear some high pitches). Would this have been a pip? And what was it doing? Usually I see him flying but dont hear anything. x |

| | | Re: Bats social sounds I do wish we knew more about social calls. Its not often you read about them in ecology reports but I do feel they are very important - but I am never quite sure what they mean.
The social calls I have heard are emitted before they leave a roost, prior to re-entry to a roost, for a time after re-entry (once in roost) audible without detector and when I have seen two to more bats come in to close contact.
I believe they can be aggressive but wonder how we know this, unless you see aggressive behaviour.
had some lovely low frequency 4 part social calls made by a pip a couple of weeks ago. Funny what I get excited about! |

| | | Re: Bats social sounds Natterers again, they live in the infill between the main stone walls, youngsters could tell they were emerging long beforewe had anything on the detectors and we knew where they came out!
This social sounds thing is obvious with them, one or two emerge then go back in to exchange information, other Natterers come out and do a brief sweep to the usual feeding ground routes and again return, then they all emerge and are gone then. It happens with the big Pipistrelle roost as well
but again only younger people can hear them, I get them on the detector
but have to be in the right place.
