| | | Snare-Free Scotland Hi all,
the campaign calling for a ban on snares in Scotland has been launched. To see photographs of Monty the dog (who survived being caught in a snare) at the launch and to send your friends an Animail visit the website at OneKind - Advocates for Animals | Scotland's leading animal protection group There's also a Snare-Free Twitition for any Tweeters out there, via @onekindtweet.
If you have a minute or two please spread the word to friends and contacts, thank you. |

| | | Re: Snare-Free Scotland Ye gods - not again!!!
it is only a year or so since this entire matter was debated in Scotland and a ban rejected in favour of a code of practice.
I have not followed the link to monty the dog escaping a snare alive - I can however assure you that there is nothing at all unusual in it since a dog in a snare will sit quietly after some initial pulling about.
My question would be what monty was doing running around unattended?
There is nothing inhumane about a snare properly set and regularly checked - I am in fact led to believe that they have been used to capture foxes for scientific research.
cheers

| | | Re: Snare-Free Scotland The problem is when they catch lactating vixens or none target species like otters, deer, badgers and peoples pets. Although if they work perfectly then little damage is done but often this is not the case as well as the stress caused they can inflict some nasty injuries, such as when an animal is not caught around the neck then struggles to get free. Ban the things once and for all I say. |

| david macdonald - Oxford university wildlife conservation research unit, used snares to catch foxes for radio tracking - the one proviso being that his were set on a cable so that the fox once caught ran out away from the hedgerow so it couldnt get tangled up. More detail in his book - running with the fox - which is available in macmillan Amazon.com: Running with the Fox (9780816018864): David MacDonald, Priscilla Barrett, Jenny MacDonald: Books
(note - apart from this post i'm not participating in the debate , but i would urge everyone to keep it civil and not go the route that this went last time )
