Baton or bat detectors?

Anyone know where I could get a cheap or second hand one of these? Have loads of bats flitting about the garden and would like to know what they are!

You can get cheap ones at about £60. Are you quite urban? i would suggest pipistrelle as the most likely bat mainly due to them being so common and the fact they like urban areas. Where in Britain are you?

Suburban but we have a big garden, lots of trees and a ditch (loads of midges! Im very grateful to those bats

)

I live near liverpool. Probably pipistrelles, they seem quite small to look at.

Habitat and food is also perfect for common pipistrelle. Lots of trees and if in close proximity to woodland you may get Brown long eared bats. These dont really show up on bat detectors and have a distinctive slow fluttery flight they specialize in moths so may be worth looking out for.

The Mk.4 Magenta is a good place to start at around £50 new there are better ones but at nearly 3x the price! The book and cd The Bat Detective is very useful and instructive. Christmas is coming

Shop around.
The best thing I ever did was buy a bat detector and I highly recommend it even as a passing interest as there is always a market for s/h detectors

Thanks for that info nightshade....hoping to be a warden some day.......so a bat detector will always come in handy for me. Will check that out for christmas as i already have my birthday present
