rats or mice?

I wouldn't be unduly worried, rats aren't an agressive animal and the biggest problem you tend to get with them is the damage they do by chewing things, spoiling food and of course the smell.
Unfortunately, rats are wary of new things, and putting down traps or poison doesn't have an immediate effect as they will tend to avoid it for the first few days.
If you are in a council property, presumably there are no constraints on you moving, so possibly the council will be able to deal with them once the property is empty next week?

Hi John, thanks again for replying, is the smell like a musty smell, ive noticed it in the living room and the downstairs toilet, hopefully they will eat the poison soon then, that makes sense about them avoiding the traps for a while, i will keep putting them in the same places then rather than moving them, there are no constaints on me moving, this had been arranged with the council before i noticed the rats, ive only know about them for 2 weeks, the council are coming back after i have moved out on monday, thanks for your help, sharon.
