| | | Vole i.d. help I saw this tiny little thing playing in an ornamental garden today. A vole, and I'm leaning towards 'field vole' but would welcome confirmation. Thanks! |

| | | Re: Vole i.d. help That's a very short tail. I'd have said bank vole for the colour of its coat, but I think it's field voles which have shorter tails?
The Woodman and Dogghound are very good at IDs. |

Yes, bank vole with that rufous brown jacket and finer head than the field vole. |

| | | Re: Vole i.d. help I think it's a field vole. The coat looks rather sandy on my monitor, and the tail is spot on for field vole. Not only is it short, but it's also quite uniform in colour. On bank vole the tail is normally two-toned - dark on top and whitish below - see on thesa images http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/pi...hp?photo=54499 . http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/pi...hp?photo=86678
Tail is about half the length of the body on bank vole and it's about 40% of the head-body length on field vole.

| | | Re: Vole i.d. help There is overlap between tail length, Field vole 18-49mm, Bank vole 36-72mm. It is not a particularly reliable feature. I have trapped several Bank voles with relatively short tails like this. The facial structure i.e ear and eye size, eye position in relationship to nose and nose shape and pelage colour (which this looks grey/rufus brown compared to the sandy grey brown of field voles) made me conclude bank vole. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
