| | | Re: Hog food!! You sure she didn't put the stuff in her garden instead? Why didn't I think of that?! Not sure that she would have the motivation to keep it up in the long term though.

| | | Re: Hog food!! Am pleased to say that I think at least 2 wild hogs are l visiting!! One of them made an angry noise when I hadn't filled the saucer tonight (oops sorry was away for a day)!! ie he tipped it up in disbelief at no food!! (I filled it up rapidly and found that the hog has put on loads of weight and is now at least three handfuls fat!! He's at least doubled his weight since Spring! I've read on your website (Hedgehog Bottom Rescue) that the wild hogs may not hibernate if there is food available????? I will confirm this with you next spring as I continue to feed the wild hogs. Large hog fed from the bowl for at least 20 mins tonight and I'm moving the saucer ever closer to the house. It's now 2 feet away from the kitchen door. Doesn't deter the hogs but the cats are NOT impressed!! lol

| | | Re: Hog food!! MAY not hibernate. What tends to happen is that they hibernate for short periods then come out to eat. It's especially important for any little ones who aren't up to full hibernation weight as they won't make it through the winter without supplementary food available.
The larger ones that are nice and fat tend to go right through. The best place to see the behaviour is at St Tiggys where the hogs in the outside visitor pens were happily coming out to eat in the snow.
There are many reasons for hibernation we don't understand. Part of it is down to lack of food, the rest????? | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
