| | Pine marten found in Northumberland! Hi all
I thought you'd be interested to hear the very exciting news that a scat from a female pine marten scat, confirmed by DNA testing, has been found in the Cheviot Hills in Northumberland! This is the first confirmed evidence of martens in Northumberland for 16 years and fantastic proof that they are still surviving there!
See the link to our website for full details - The pine marten blog Pine marten news from VWT
Best wishes
Lizzie

They're clearly very elusive creatures - but I'm really hoping a marten will get captured in one of the camera traps. Can't wait for further news.
Let's also hope VWT can get some similar good news with the other relict populations, especially the Welsh ones!!!!

We have been looking for evidence of them in Milton Rigg woods for a while now.
Any other places you would like us to look into LizzieVWT. Between Newcastle and Gretna, (could make a detour) we make the journey once every 6 weeks.
PM me if we can be of assistance.

Thanks for your replies - it is indeed great news.
Vince - between Newcastle and Gretna is all good marten country! Particularly the Cheviots and the Eden Valley - we have had lots of sightings here. What sort of evidence have you been looking for? Scats?
Rob - good luck with your camera trap, it would be fantastic to get some marten photos on it!

| | | Re: Pine marten found in Northumberland! According to an article in, I think, the Independent recently, pine martens were assumed to be extinct in most of England from the '50s. It's now turning out that the crafty little sods have been hiding in pine trees all along! Amazing! Who'd have thought it! The trouble some critters take to fool humans! Could it be that we scare the bjasus out of them?
