Could either a Wood Mouse or a Yellow Necked Mouse be happy climbing a tree. I saw a mouse type mammal in a tree with browny back and light underside. I could not see if there was a yellow band or not across the chest.

Both would be very happy climbing a tree to get to the foodstuff they desire.  |

As kup said, both are proficient climbers and spend much time off the ground, more so at night.
A couple of years ago I watched a young rat climb down the Ivy on a sizeable beech tree. |
