| | | Bats Hello,
Can anyone help? My 4 year old son has suddenly become obsessed with bats. Does anybody know a good place to watch them near where we live in Dartford, Kent. |

I'm at the other end of the country but might suggest speaking to someone from the Kent Bat Group as a starter. Good luck. Kent Bat Group - home |

I have found entries for this walk on 1st and 3rd June, so you would need to phone to check which it is.
You need to book.
If you book- PLEASE do not drop out. I was at an event this weekend where half the people didn't turn up, and others had been turned away.

If you just want to see if you can see some bats yourself, the best time is when they come out in the evening- about 20 minutes after sunset. |

| | | Re: Bats Our commonest bat is the Pipistrelle which emerges just about at sunset and likes to hunt along woodland edges. In urban areas, tree-lined roads seem to make an acceptable substitute woodland edge. They like to roost in old buildings so your local churchyard might be a good place to look.
Another species you might find is the Daubentons. These bats specialise in hunting insects low over water so you might find them on a local lake or canal.
If you have cattle and/or sheep farming in your area you might also see our largest bat, the Noctule flying high over the fields just before dusk as it hunts for the large beetles which are its staple prey.

| | | Re: Bats Have a look at the Bat Conservation Trust too.
They have a children's section. Welcome to our Young Batworkers' Club page! - Bat Conservation Trust
If you have £60 or more to spare you could buy a bat detector, but it's best to go along to an event so you can see them work before you buy your own. I beleive the cheapest is the Magenta Bat4. |
