Young Black Rabbit

When I took the dog for his run this morning I saw this little guy sitting on top of a Rabbit earth with all his mates.
Went back this afternoon and took a few pics.

Cute little fella.

Until recently I'd never seen a black one in the wild. Felt a right idiot when I went to Vale Wildlife Rescue and saw one in the car park. Assuming it was an escaped pet, attempted to catch it with predictable results.

Apparently it's a result of the mixy virus. They have loads of black ones round there.

Do you know the explaination of the mixy causing this. Does it destroy some colour genes? Mendelism interests me, not that I know much, cos there's so much to remember, but it is amazing how complicated nature is !..Posie..

Ooo didn't know that either, presumed it was a escapee pet that had bred & passed on the genes. Love this site, you learn something new each time you log in!

Sin a black rabbit tother day.Mentioned it to a farmer and he said "that's it then,myxy soon".I asked what he meant by his remark.He then told me that black rabbits are put down by the ministery to spread it.He said that years ago he met one of the men who were culling the badgers in the area and he had some black rabbits with him to drop off in different areas to spread myxy.I ant never heard of this before but later on I met another farmer who assured me it was true.I've sin um about before and other various colours which I have taken to be tame ums released into the wild.Don't last too long though.

No I don't. If I did I might not have been embarrassingly chasing a wild bunny round a car park. It was only when I dashed back into the hospital to see if they had a net, that they tried not to look too pitying and explained.

Your best bet is to phone Vale and ask them. They've been working with wildlife for 28 years and have a very good vet who knows pretty much everything.
