I have to hold my hand up and admit that I killed a vertebrate today

.
One of my newly hatched taddies was barely moving (even when moved with a stick) and had a lump of white material on the ventral surface of the "head". So, caught in a dilemma, I reckoned it was safer to put it out of it's misery in case it was infected (some nasty frog fungi around) and removed it from the pond.
A vixen in my garden has been extending her den in the past few weeks (from a hole under a hazel hedge onto my raised bed, which is how I noticed), and judging by the nightly racket in the woods over the past couple of months, she has not been staying in watching the telly. So I'm hopeful she will produce and her cubs can torment our cats again

(I think they are just curious, not malevolent)
