Where can I find an old mouse nest?

Hi,

I have been given a bee nesting box and the instructions state that the best thing to attract a queen bee is an old mouse nest, it seems they like the smell.

Does anyone have any idea where I can found an old mouse nest? I live in the country but I am not sure where I should look to find a nest, or even if I would know one if I saw one. So any help would be appreciated.

Hi Emily,

Perhaps firstly you should try a local farm, most farmers will be glad to help you, the ideal place is old barns and feed stores.

The other thing you could do is enquire of your friends/neighbours to find out if any have old nests in their lofts or sheds, i am sure someone will be able to provide you with just what you need.

Have you tried a local pet shop? Even one which sells only food and bedding might be able to offer some advice.
You could try putting an advert in the local free press?

Or drop a line to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, they might be able to offer advice on attracting bees.

Having a good look in dense vegetation, along thick hedgerows, farm buildings, can be productive.
