| | | Hedgehog hibernation
Hedgehog hibernation is upon us and so just a quick post to remind people to keep an eye out for Hedgehogs moving around at this time of the year. I found one this morning at work which was really small and nowhere near the right weight to make it over winter. So i took it down to a localish Hedgehog centre during my dinner hour and hopefully it'll be fine 
Hedgehogs need to weight around 1lb 4oz to make it through a winter |

Yes Lincs .. a weight of 450g is hardly enough . And when someone finds a hedghog running around with 450g in cold nights, then you can be sure that the hedghog will lose a lot of weight only on search for more food in these nights. SO he will probably not even have that weight when he at last hibernates.
A hedgehog under 550 to 600g at start of hibernation has not much chance to survive a long winter.
People with hedghogs in garden can help them in feeding them now with catfood.
THey do not need to take them indoors or to treat against parasites but the food helps the hedghogs to gain enough weight for hibernation.
Only obviously sick hedghogs or hedghogs which still have a weight under 400g in Novermber should be taken indoors for winter.
They will not gain enough weight outdoors and mostly do not even have hibernating nests , as they spend all time and energies with search for food.

Hedgehogs need to weight around 1lb 4oz to make it through a winter | There are loads of underweight hedgehogs running about that need urgant help, a lot of them were born late in the year, if you find a young underweight hoggy, you need to keep it warm with food and water, you will find help on this site where people are struggling to keep these babes alive, many are too far gone time they get help. If you can t look after hoggy, you can find someone who cares for hoggies near where you live on the site above which has a list for the uk. Pauline. |

I found one in late november weighing in at just 150g.
I took him in with not much hope for his survival, as he was found mostly by my dog and seemed to be in shock, but he's gained weight and is my friend now
he lets me pick him up and hold him, and has been washed and treted for his ticks and fleas, and should be able to go back to the wild this spring.
He's lovely |
