| | Re: Mouse ID please I'm sorry, but if anyone said it was a wood mouse, I would definatly disagree, here are my reasons for my conclusion that it is not a wood mouse:
1. I have rescued and am now looking after a wood mouse
2. It looks too plump to be a wood mouse
3. its ears are smaller and rounder
4. Its fur is more fluffy, a wood mouse has smooth fur.
5. it's nose is different to my wood mouse. well they are my reasons, so I would definatly say this is a harvest mouse Hope I helped! Ellie X |

As indicated by the half peanut in the foreground of the photo, it was tiny - body length only about 30mm when hunched up.
Thanks in advance | Compare for yourself: Both images from WAB Gallery, unfortunately couldn't find a pic of Yellow necked mouse on WAB but the main diagnostic features of ears, size and tale length are the same in Yellow neck and wood mouse. with colouring being the main ID factor between the two.
Look at the ears and difference in tail length and take into account the small size described for the above subject 30 mm these are the only reliable indicators in the photo. Colour variations occur in all spc and possible distortio by light conditions make Ids based on colour and markings from a picture potentially unreliable.
Its also not a good idea to base your judgment on the location being an indicator when you don't have all the details, all we know in this case is that it was found in a feed bin, to assume that feed bin to be nowhere near a posible harvest mouse habitat is not logical. Stick to the bare facts available and compare the pics and think again

| | | Re: Mouse ID please I really don't think that the ears in the original photograph are large enough for Yellow-necked mouse, nor are the eyes large enough. As for "the bright white undersides with a clear delineation between the colours" this does not show in the picture!
I agree with Harvest Mouse.

| | | Re: Mouse ID please When I lived in the Warwickshire we got quite a few Harvest Mice overwintering in wheat straw stacks as well as the ubiquitus Woodmice and a smattering of Yellow Necked Mice so I am reasonably happy to ID all of these.
Despite what the guy says about colouration this is exactly the right Colour for a harvest mouse. It is totally wrong for any other british mouse. That thick tail looks promising too, if this is prehensile then that is the clincher.
I am 90% sure that you`ve got Harvest Mouse there. Make sure that you record it in you local Wildlife Records Office. Present them with the Photo and let them decide.
Happy Hunting,
