This sounds like the best idea to me.
Although trapping is more ethical than some methods, it's far from perfect and in my opinion it should only really be carried out when the benefit from it outweighs the stress to the animals you catch, i.e if you are carrying out monitoring of species presence/absence/abundance in an area.
Perhaps if you join your local mammal group then after some training you might be able to get involved in some surveying/monitoring in which case you could increase your own knowledge whilst also hopefully benefiting conservation of the British small mammal fauna.
