Who will eat them??

I'm landed with dozens of bird fat balls which smell slightly rancid - (just bought them - and it's a long way back to the shop) if I just throw them all out in the fields (taking the plastic off of course) could anything eat them safely or would I do more harm than good? I was wondering if rodents could eat them safely??

My dogs threatened to eat them, so they can't be too far gone!

Your dogs have given you the answer, I would put half on the ground near cover and hang the rest.

leave them on the ground and the foxes will take them away as will badgers,crows,magpies etc etc

When we had snow on the ground here, we have a fox visiting our bird table every night so see what he could pinch. I think their digestive system is capable of handling quite "ripe" stuff, so they should be OK with them. I tend to think even the birds would probably manage them OK.
