| | | Partial white stoat Hello
Normally I hang out on the bird/butterfly/dragonflies etc (owt with wings!) parts of WAB but today I saw this
I didn't want to get to close due to having the dog (on lead) with me and managed to edge close enough to get the cropped pics. I stood and watched it for a few minutes (and it appeared to be watching me or the dog) before it went into the reed beds causing uproar amongst some Great Tits.
I believe it could be a white stoat (or partial) on the Mammal Society website I found this "What makes the stoat go white in winter?
The shortening days of autumn bring on the moult from summer to winter coat. In northern populations the winter fur is white (known as ermine), whilst further south the colour change may be incomplete or not occur at all. In some areas certain animals turn white but others do not. Also, more females go white than males. The tip of the stoat's tail always stays black."
The pics were taken today (26/1/10) so a week or so after the last of the snow cleared. Before Christmas i saw either a stoat or weasel not sure which at the same site not far from where I took this pic. This time it was been mobbed by B H Gulls.
After typing all this someone will tell me it's a ferret!
If you got this far thanks
Paul

| | | Re: Partial white stoat It looks like a stoat to me - not that I have much experience with them in the field (that would be none!) but I have worked alot with taxidermy mounts of stoats at different stages of moult and they looked like that!
An amazing sight - lucky you!

First time I have seen on like that in fact I have only seen them a few times before in any state. Usually see a quick glimpse as one runs past.
