| | | Re: Large grey 'wolf like' mammal?? Back to foxes. I live on the edge of a country estate. which has a large fox hound kennels there as well. and crikey, those dogs scare me and never mind the foxes. I often see foxes around. about a month ago . isaw the biggest fox of my life. quite tall and leggy. but with grey flanks and underside. in fact i mistook it for a large dog at first.
so i was thinking, are countryside foxes bigger than urban types. i reckon the countryside depending on food would let a fox live longer and be a bigger beasty. who knows ? |

| | | Re: Large grey 'wolf like' mammal?? I saw a wolf yesterday while travelling from Canterbury to Brighton. I was on the A290 (had only just joined this road minutes earlier) when I saw an animal on the road and a car swerve to avoid it and reflexes caused me to slam my brakes on -after I had come to a complete stop I realised it was a large wolf. I know that it was a wolf as I had only recently visited Long Leat Safari park and had seen the exact same animal there. It was large with grey and dark grey hair, bushy around its head with a slim snout and basically unmistakable as a wolf. My friend is Canadian and was my passenger, she said 'OMG that is a wolf' she was shocked as she is aware that they are not found here in the wild. I looked in my rear view mirror as it went behind my car and I saw about 4 other cars had also stopped and the wolf was stood in front of the cars and was just standing still before it appeared to get spooked and ran off into the nearby woods/trees. We then carried on driving until we came to a shell service station where I called RSPCA and reported the sighting. I don't know if they took me seriously but I am without any doubt that this was a wolf. It was day light and it was much to large to be a dog and did not look like any breed of domestic dog, it looked like a wild wolf. I know others saw it too and I hope they also reported it. |

| | | Re: Large grey 'wolf like' mammal?? I remain sceptical. I recently spoke to a couple who had brought their dog into a bar on campus. He (the dog!) is a pure-bred Husky. Flopped out on the floor, head on forepaws, he is 5 foot from nose to base of tail. Add 18" of tail and he is a l-o-o-ng dog. He weighs 7 stone - 98 pounds. He has a big skull but with a long narrow muzzle. His coat is long and dense, with a heavy ruff round his neck. He is pure white and could easily be taken for a Siberian wolf in winter pelage. He is also as soft as a very soft thing. He had some wee kiddies playing some pretty rough games with him and he just gave them a big lick.
As said by others here, it's all down to training. Raised by some feral inner-city yob as an attack dog, he would be a dangerous animal. Raised as he was by decent folk as a pet he's a wonderful companion.
Although I for one would not care to break into his home . . . Wolf or dog invading his territory might not be a good idea.
