Munched grass stalks can be field vole, of course. The tell-tale sign with field vole is that the piles they make of chopped-up lengths tend to be on the petite side, and also when eating juncus they strip the green off leaving lenghts of white pith. I don't believe water voles do this (unless anyone knows different?). |

Terrific advice - I had no idea about the juncus effect - thanks both, will use a ruler (I always carry one for this eventuality, but often forget !!)
Whats wrong with good old imperial, or are all voles metricated.................?

Nothing wrong with imperial Ken, I'm all for pints!
Reason is that the majority of guides give measurements in metric, in fact I cannot remember ever seeing footprint dimensions given in inches.
The only bit of good that came out of a burgulary at my house last year was a small photographic scale square that the Scenes of Crime man gave me. I use it regularly, yesterday was the last time...  | | | |
