'Think its foxes'

For the last couple of nights we have been wakened by what I can only describe as a loud howling/screeching noise in the early hours....A neighbour tells me this is foxes, and what we are hearing is their mating call. I live in a suburb south of Glasgow City Centre and although I have seen the occasional fox I have never heard this sound before.....Can anyone confirm ?

Could well be foxes. To me, they sound rather like a baby crying.

Foxes make a wide range of calls and noises, some quite dreadful like a woman screaming in the woods.

Thanks Owl-Light tried the wav sounds and its definately 'a fox at night' although it did sound like a woman screaming, but so far no reports from Strathclyde Police!!!!!!!!

The first time I heard it myself, I was walking home with a friend past the wooded area of our local park one night. A terrible sound, just like a woman screaming. I was in a real quandry I can tell you. I wanted to help 'her' but we were just another two girls on our own and heaven only knows what was going on in there!

Fortunately my friend grew up in the country and was familiar with the sound and quickly reassured me it was just a Fox.

the vixen usually gives this scream although young foxes can call in this manner when they are testing a new bit of territory or sometimes when they squabble over food. i think they use it to avoid a fight.

Well that's a bit scary. Does sound like a wailing woman. Weird.
