| | | Re: Roadkill for ID My thoughts too Alex90, there seems too much white on the facial mask for it to be a polecat. It looks like it was in good condition before the accident. Poor creature.

| | | Re: Roadkill for ID Hi Phoebe & Alex,
Thanks for taking the time & having a look. It was found in Somerset which also, i think adds weight to the ferret id. The small pale patch on the throat/neck also points to ferret. The flanks to my eyes are too pale also. I am ready to be corrected though!
Rob

| | | Re: Roadkill for ID I wouldnt right it off due to the pale face, i took some pictures of the ones at the BWC, and as you can see in this pic the mask is very white... perhaps due to the time of year? Polecat - Mustela putorius on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
But as you say it looks to be in good condition so perhaps it was a recently escaped pet.
But yes the flanks is what doesnt look right to me, and also the shape of the body(assuming that it wasnt due to a car flattening its middle ) looks more ferret like than polecat.
It's not entirely impossible one might be found in the somerset area as they have been reported over that way. |

| | | Re: Roadkill for ID Difficult, the back of the ear looks pale which suggests ferret over polecat (dark in polecat). I think I would either open up its face and look at its skull for the morphological differences (erm.....no), or leave its as Mustela cf. putorius. |
