Yes the bark and outer wood is starting to rot.
I knew that Badgers do this to find food. I didn't know that Foxes did.

Hi Gaza,

it's more likely to be badgers -- with their sharp claws and powerful muscular forepaws making light work of most obstacles -- than foxes, but the latter can feed heavily on insects/invertebrates if conditions permit.
