| | | which seal is which?
Scrolling through my images from the weekend in norfolk, I was wondering if actually I had pics of both species - look at the difference in head shape here, one with a long nose and big nostrils and one with a 'cuter' short face and small nostrils. could this be a grey and a common seal? Or could this just be sexual dimorphism in the common seal, Any seal experts out there??! |

V - shaped nostrils as opposted to parallel ones of Grey, more rounder features than Grey, and one of the other names of the Common is Spotted Seal - Greys are more 'patchy' and less 'speckled' than these.
Bye the way, nice pics.. |

| | | Re: which seal is which? Well, the Handbook says males are generally darker than females, so you could have a male and a female. No mention of size differences, though the Handbook illustration suggests that males are larger.

Yeah, my collins 'complete' British Animals say that the males are bigger and heavier, so I think that must be it!! |

| | | Re: which seal is which? We don't get many Commons here, mainly Greys. Blakeney is certainly known more for it's Commons isn't it? The large pups in the recent pics from your trip would have been Commons as they breed a few months earlier than Greys.
Went to Donna Nook a couple of days ago, no Greys coming in to pup yet. They'll probably start coming in the next two weeks or so. |
