Take comfort that between you all, you did everything you possibly could for him; you couldn’t have done any more than that. You cared and you tried. You went to great lengths to help him – approaching truckers at a motel to see if you could hitchhike a lift for the wee fella really made me smile
As Marcia has already said, his short existence wasn’t in vain as you now have a valuable hedgehog carer network in your area, AND you’ve gained some firsthand knowledge and experience which will stand you in good stead for the next needy hog(s) that comes along
Take care. |

Sorry to hear of the recent hoglet losses. Thanks for everyone's support and encouragement on the thread.
Prickles weighed in at 301 grams this evening and spends all night rearranging his box and sleeping quarters. I'm really pleased he's out of ear shot - I can only just hear the bell ringing on his cat toy when he tries to take it into his shoebox bedroom at 2am.
Hope everyone is well, Marg |

Received a phone call from Helen this evening, she has named my hoggy Peanuts who's a little girl hoglet as it turns out, she's doing really well put on some weight whilst she has been in care i'm pleased she now weighs 430g and is on a course of antibiotics as she has worms but nice to know she is being looked after very well and in the best of hands and filling out. Will be popping round to pay her a visit before Christmas, I never fought that meal worms would make such a good present lol! |

Thankfully I have a wee bit of good news for you.
Mamma hedgehog is still alive and is back in my garden!!!!! The dog spotted her a few nights ago and after chasing the dog away went up to her and told her that I had done everything I could for her babies and it was like she understood. She turned her head and looked straight at me for a few moments. By the time I got the dog inside and grabbed her some food mamma hedgehog had gone.
I have been putting out a bit of food and water near where she comes in and the food has been all gone the next day. Apple and raisens or cheese and raisens. Not putting meat out. Last night finished hanging out my washing just after dark and checked the food and it had gone already, but no sign of her.
I wonder if her milk had dried up with being so hungry for so long before I realized and she just didnt have anything to feed her babies anymore.
They were at least 8 or 9 weeks old but half the size they should have been.
Take care everyone and hope you all have a really lovely Christmas. |

Hedgehogs are not meant to eat any cow related dairy products ever. Feeding them these products makes them ill, in hindsight it could have been related to her being fed dairy that led to the problem with her babies. Also, raisins are a considered a no no by many as they can get stuck to the roof of the hedgehog's mouth - however I'm sure Peg's advice is accurate in recommending that they are only to be a treat every now and again. I am aware hedgehogs appear to love dairy, but (like cats) they are lactose intolerant and it makes them sick.
If you're going to provide some food to the adult hedgehog, please limit it to water and cat biscuits/jellimeat.
I hope this helps and I'm sorry for not realising sooner that you were feeding dairy to the lactating mother.
Best of luck in the future. |

He's full of mange and been treated with Advocate, but crusty and facing regular oil baths. He's eating really well and pretty nocturnal now. I'm sure he must be approaching the 400gram mark, but will weigh tomorrow/Monday, weight gain may be slower currently due to feeling poorly and eating less frequently now he's an adolescent.
Hope Peanuts is getting over the worms she's had and feeling much better. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
