| | | Dormouse in my garden My wife spotted this fellow while I was at work on Monday:
So, finally, I get to live up to my WAB alias (even if I didn't actually see the dormouse myself).
I'd be interested to know if anyone knows of reports of dormice visiting bird feeders in broad daylight like this. The pics were taken at 2.30pm (through double-glazing, hence the poor quality) and the dormouse stayed in full view for at least 10 minutes before ambling off. |

| | | Re: Dormouse in my garden It looks quite big against the bird feeder, I wonder if it's a glis glis - the edible dormouse, though I thought they were only to be found around Tring in Hertfordshire. I would add that I've seen neither, though I'd like to!

| | | Re: Dormouse in my garden i think that is a common dormouse(muscardinus avellanarius) ... the Edible Dormouse(glis glis) is much larger and greyer in colour and tail is alot bushier than that of the common dormouse.
It's unusual to see dormice at all let alone in broad daylight, it may well be that the dormouse regularly visits the bird feeder on a night time too.
They are absolutely stunning creatures!

I'm still trying to establish how unusual this sighting is.
We knew there were hazel dormice in the garden and the surrounding lanes and woods (I've found chewed nuts; there are dormice nestboxes locally). It's just that we never in our wildest dreams expected to get photographic evidence like this... |

| Here are the record shots as promised. The animal's pre-hibernation fat is clearly visible.

| | | Re: Dormouse in my garden Lucky - I've never seen one!
The images are rather dark. I've taken the liberty of adjusting one in Photoshop:
It's still attributed to you, 'muscardinus'.
