| | | Exmoor Red Deer Hi Everyone,
I'm getting pretty excited as I'm heading to Exmoor for the first time and am hoping to see at least a bit of the red deer rut. I am a pretty keen photographer and was hoping that someone might be able to give me some help with planning. I am trying to work out where the best place is to stay and where I can go to maximise my chances of getting close to the red deer.
Also does anyone know if there are guided deer stalks?
Thanks |

Thanks | There are land rover tours you can take.
But I would go out on your own if I were you.
I don't think it matters where you stay whether on the moor or around the edge.
Any details you want just let me know !!! |

| | | Re: Exmoor Red Deer Thanks for the links.
We were kind of hoping not to have to do it by car as we want to get out and about walking.
Could you perhaps give me some suggestions on the best places to go walking to see the red deer on Exmoor? Of course I understand that they are wild and don't stick to the one spot but at least some generic starting points would be great
Thanks again |

Thanks again | Ley Hill, sweetworthy, hannecombe, or a little secret place just south of there where I see them everyday. |

| | | Re: Exmoor Red Deer Johnny Kingdom Does a safari trip, i went on one this time last year was very good we saw a fair bit but it was more the fact of beign there with Johnny kingdom.
I actually ended up in one of the television programs he did, a year on exmoor with johnny kingdom .... thats my claim to fame!
Stalking red deer by yourself on exmoor is fantastic, there are many places to see red deer i found a spot which is an open meadow surrounded by a valley of forest. you get deer out dusk and dawn generally although you can see them grazing during the day regularly.
best thing to do is speak to a few locals find a good spot arrive an hour or so before it gets dark and then sit and wait.
You can try stalking the deer which i have done many a time whilst on exmoor, however if the deer see you even at long distance they will bolt so its betetr to sit and wait rather than disturb them. |

Thanks | The wife (almost normal) and I stayed on exmoor for the first week of our honeymmon - we stayed here West Lee Farm, 4 Star Farmhouse Bed Breakfast on the edge of Exmoor, North Devon which is just down the road from molland common (walking distance) which is one of the main deer areas featured by jonny kingdom
Maggi and Andy are very knowledgeable about the local wildlife and happy to point their guests in the right direction.
