I'm 26 with decent hearing (in that I can hear wildlife and ignore people!). Do bats make other sounds other than echo location that I could hear? Bare in mind, this wee thing is flying about mental chasing moths? | If you think Noctules are incredible, wait till you hear the Horseshoe bats!
You might be able to hear harmonics from Pipistrelles, but they do also make sounds much nearer the range of human hearing, especially at this time of year. The Pips outside my house are making some very peculiar sounds in the last few weeks (judging by the sonograms)

| | | Re: Bats That's interesting henrya, I recorded Common pipistrelle last night within a wall roost making a sound I've never heard before, like a machine gun at 22 kHz. It never emerged during the one hour after sunset but at 06:19 this morning re-entered the same roost.
Others in the same property were using four different emergence points and social calling - "chonking".
I'll see if I can download the file later.
excoriate - if I could give you some well meant advice - look after your hearing. I wish I had done so at 26 and beyond. |

| | | Re: Bats I've heard bats before I've seen them, so there has to be some noise they make that those of us with high-frequency hearing can get.
I can also hear dying CRT monitors, and various other things that no-one else around me seems to be able to; most of the time, I really, truly wish I couldn't. |

| | | Re: Bats re my earlier post - I had it in my mind that sound files could be uploaded to WAB, I cannot find the facility.
Can anyone enlighten me please?
evilgrayson - I wish I had my high frequency hearing back and be able to hear song birds and the like. |
