Walking along the river bank this afternoon (sounds like the start of a nursery story  ) I was lucky enough to see a couple of young voles so engrossed in feeding that they hardly took any notice of me at all, I could actually stroke one without it panicking . One obliged to pose for a few pictures, of which this was the best. 
Can anyone tell me which vole it is, it was roughly 2 inches (50mm) long (I can separate them by their skulls  , not so good with the live beasties  )

I think you should PM Vole-woman with this one! I think its cute but I have no idea which vole it is - looks like the first photo of a bank vole in the Gallery but that doesnt say what size it is.
Otherwise do another thread with VOLE in the title  |

Oh, how gorgeous! Dogghound's good on bank voles/field voles. From what he's said, I'd go for bank, but I'm only guessing. |

Ta both,
from what I can find, grey-brown fur is field vole and red-brown is bank vole. I reckon this is reddish, so I'm happy to go along with you both on it being a bank vole.
