If you ask me, by the very definition of the word, native just means they were born here ... so I'm happy to accept any species as native after just one generation living wild.

| | | Re: What wild animals WONT a wildlife centre/ Rspca take in? Technically Brown Rat should be considered Naturalised as it came here with help from Man and has since established a self-sustaining population.
Native means it occurs here naturally or has arrived here by its own means without assistance from Man.

We are self-funded because I am lucky enough to have a good job that allows me now to work from home via computer + broadband, so I can also give round the clock care to wildlife casualties.
Not every wildlife centre is so lucky ... perhaps you should consider supporting one in your local area. | i'm sure carolyn (wildlife rescuer) who runs Vale wildlife hospital , or Foxton from foxton wildlife rescue, would be glad of your support - you could reach either of them by pm.

| | | Re: What wild animals WONT a wildlife centre/ Rspca take in? I am in total agreement with most of what valleyforge has said. I think we differ in opinion & policy for permanently disabled wildlife (all centres differ in their policies for these individuals) but we too take in ALL British wildlife, including brown rats & pigeons.
We are here to help any sick or injured wild animal, most of which it has to be said, suffer at the hands us humans, either accidentally or sometimes intentionally.

I'm afraid I cannot give you the reference as I can't remember! This therefore, makes Brown rats non-native, as Adam says, they are Naturalised. |

Then there's the question of insects and other invertebrates (which, let's face it, are still animals). Obviously, a housefly with wings pulled off would have to be rejected (surely?) but what about a handsome (albeit ill / injured) stag beetle?
Of course, this line of arguement could reach ridiculous depths (few bacteria - other than the friendlies - will ever deserve human kindness in any shape or form) so I'll stop here! |

Hand on heart though, I can also fairly say that we've never turned away anyone who's brought us an invertibrate casualty ... but only because it's never happenned.
And for anyone who cares about such matters, our general advice would be that no good can come of adding Dettol to your Yakult. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
