I just pent 2 weeks on holiday in Orkney (great place), and while I was there, I saw an otter on the edge of the sea!
But the bad part is that it was a very unhealthy otter.
We were walking along some rocky shore when we spotted this otter lying on the seaweed very close to us. It was still breathing, but it didnt move even though we were very close, only 15 feet or so away. we slowly backed off, so not to traumatise it further, then spoke to some other people who were watching it, one of whom called a line for 'beached seal rescue' because it was the closest they could find to otter rescue, but then we had to leave for dinner with a friend.
Later, at the hotel, we ran into some of the other people who saw the otter, and had stayed after us, and they told us that before anyone from the rescue squad had arrived, it had crawled off into the sea.
We'll never know if it survived, but hopefully it had just had a bump on a rock or something and needed to recover.
