The same reason as always... Mankind! What a misnomer that is; should be Manunkind.

Like most of the species lost to the UK, beavers were persecuted into extinction from these islands by habitat destruction and over-hunting.

It really is maddening to think that someone would do this but not surprising given the mentality of the people we're talking about. 2 Golden Eagles poisoned this summer is a prime example.

I hope they're wrong about the shooting. I suppose ignorance and fear is hard to eradicate.

A friend of mine runs a hunting business in Sweden, where they're common: he tells me that if a beaver from a group is killed, then the others up stumps and find a new place, often up to 10 miles away. The others may well survive if they've moved.
