A very British Red Squirrel :-)

OK, I know these shots are a bit 'samey'....but the little devils were just too quick for me to get any 'action' shots!

That's my daughters hand holding the nut. I eventually persuaded her to keep hold of it while I took the photo, rather than her letting them run off with it!

Bear in mind I was in a dark hide and the Squirrels were outside on the feeding 'platform'.

Twas a first for my daughter to see a Red Squirrel, let alone feed one!









Forgot to say that these shots were taken at a nature reserve on the Isle of Wight:-)

Thanks for those great pics.The nearest place to us to see them is Formby point, but numbers are greatly down[60% ?] thanks to our 'mates' the Grey Squirrel.

Brilliant pics!

I have to take issue with pegasus though. The reason that reds are now non-existant in most of England is due to loss of habitat. Ie pine woodlands. Exactly the same reason that there are no longer any pine martins in this country. Their fate would be the same with or without grey squirrels thanks to us.

I believe in places where they still maintain a toe hold - ie Cumbria, Scotland the grey and red often live side by side. I've certainly seen both their.

Ron, she was so excited! Someone told us that we should tap a nut gently on the platform and the squirrels would come running! It worked and within a few minutes of us being there, two of them scampered across the hide roof and onto the platform. One came in through the viewing window and tried to get in our bag of nuts!

I remember them as a child in woods near Peterborough 60 years ago...I've been told I must be mistaken...but I remember them as close as those pictures, and even at age 5... I know what I saw,definitely reds.
