We get foxes in back gardens of the houses in our road and quite a few people put food out for them.
I have seen the interactions between foxes and cats over many years and I have never seen any fights. My own view is that in some way they both realise that the consequences could be too severe - both could be capable of causing injury to the other. Most of the time there seems to be a somewhat uneasy tolerance.
Oddly enough our cat, who is fairly small, stands her ground against all foxes. She has never thankfully, given the size of the the foxes she has challenged, attacked one, but makes it clear they are not welcome, but this could be because the garden is her territory. |

| | | Re: Fox Cubs and Fox with Cat!! We had a Siamese cat when I was growing up. She was an an incredible hunter capable of catching squirrels, and also an awesome fighter of all other cats. One day, I saw her puffed up to double her normal size, staring out a big old fox. She ended up lashing out in full fury and he ran away.
More strikingly, there is a little cat up the road that I have seen defending herself in our garden against two foxes who wanted to eat her. She won.
Friends a postcode away lost their young cat to foxes, however. |

With regards to cats and foxes; the way i see it is that a fox is capable of killing a cat where as the cat is not capable of killing the fox. The cat though is still able to inflict some serious injuries to the fox, injuries which could result in the loss of an eye! Also a cat has far more agility and could easily jump a fence, tree, gate etc.
Most cats i have come across and have known seem to have this kind of attitude where they act like they are "Gods" and everything else is below them... the cat sits high up on its own thrown..... indeed the cat yesterday with the fox seemed to be unnerved by the presence of the fox and gave it the look as if to say "and what?,,, move along"
I think in instances where the fox does kill kill a cat the cat would likely to be either young, ill and weak or getting old... but then thats just the way of nature. |
