| | | what killed the rat while out this morning i came across a dead rat, it looked as if its throat had been ripped out and its windpipe was hanging a good 2 inches out. any ideas on what could of done this? |

| | | Re: what killed the rat That was the only damage? possibly a weasel or stoat (or polecat, feral ferret) . Although they usually bite to the back of the head/neck. Could also have been a cat. |

| | | Re: what killed the rat I'm guessing it was a cat, because as Dogghound said stoats would go for the back of the neck. Cats tend to kill out of instinct rather then hunger (if a pet cat), where as stoats, weasels etc., would probably eat some or most of it.

| | | Re: what killed the rat It is unusual for either to leave a kill , dont cats normally bring there kills home with them ? ive seen stoats dragging a rabbit a long way to there den if thats what its called ,on a david attenbourough programme i think it was. |

| | | Re: what killed the rat There is another possibility albeit a rare one - another rat may have caused the damage during a fight. The carcase was not eaten so I would not rule out a cat but there is a possibility that the injury was not motivated by predatory intent given there was no sign of feeding. |
