| | | Re: Bat for ID please (flying in daylight) Actually, Natterer's was my other possible - on account of the ears - although if you look at some pics of a noctule in flight, their ears seem remarkably big compared to when you see them close up. Which is why I wasn't sure
I didn't go for the smaller ID features because it's a bit blurred, but you may be right about the S-shape. And it's more likely to be feeding round water than a noctule generally, although during the day if it was disturbed it could have just been stretching it's wings before settling. I suppose there's also the roost to consider Natterer's like old buildings, Noctules generally are tree roosters.
Since we both thought natterer's though it could well be that. I wouldn't like to say definitely either way really. Except not Daubentons or pip lol |

| | | Re: Bat for ID please (flying in daylight) I've asked my friends again (there were four of us)
General consensus was -
Size: bigger than a robin, smaller than a blackbird
When I first saw it I thought it was a robin or dunnock scooting across the moat from one bit of cover to another. I was looking down at it then.
Colour : mid to dark brown (at least on top)
One of the pictures above seems to show palish brown underneath, but it's against the sky.
At one point it was coming towards me at about 20 feet and it just looked dark brown (against leaf canopy and sky). Two of us didn't see any white on it, the others aren't sure.
It didn't "flitter", it went in smooth lines up and down the path, ignoring people, looping up into the trees around and back again.
(I like the idea of it being a Natterer - lovely name and it looks like a teddy bear!) | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
