| | | Re: food for foxes Well Sam did a Fox visit last night?
One thing you may want to do is if you think th Fox is visiting during the night leave some trays of soft damp soil close to the food hopefully you will get a footprint and be able to determine who your visitor is.

| | | Re: food for foxes My foxes get a variety of food mostly leftover scraps and raw eggs, once a week they get a treat of raw chicken wings but as mentioned don't give them too much, this time of year the cubs will soon be about and the mother will be teaching them to hunt.
Don't ever give them cooked bones as they splinter and can stick in their gullets and stomachs.
An interesting thing last night, a very timid little vixen has suddenly appeared, not one of my regular lot and the other foxes won't let her near the food so I scattered some a few yards away from them, she came over to get some ( didn't seem worried at all that I was standing there ) and grabbed a bit and ran off with it but before she went she peed on the spot where the food was, this happened 8 times until she had finished it all, she couldn't have needed 8 pees so I presume she was putting a marker telling the other foxes to keep away from her food it was fascinating to watch, I shall go up again tonight to see if she's there again. |

| | | Re: food for foxes Pat, nice to hear that there's another vixen on the scene round your way. The scenting is fascinating. Usually they mark where there isn't any food, so she may indeed be a sly fox telling the others that this is an empty cache. Cheeky little thing
I've had little luck in the garden (except with a trail cam), but have a wonderful vixen at work who is a dab hand at rabbit-catching. |

This little vixen is so small I thought that she was a cub at first but looking closely I noticed she had large teats so she's probably got some little cubs somewhere, I don't know where she's come from but she runs off and disappears down the lane, all the other foxes live in the small wood where I feed them. Talking about this peeing thing, I watched a male fox the other night walking down the lane and peeing against every tree or post he could find must have been at least 20 I presume he was marking his territory, it was fascinating to watch. I could spend hours watching them all |

| | | Re: food for foxes I've just got back from feeding them all, the little tiny vixen came running up to me as soon as I got out of my car, she's very tame so I think somebody in one of the houses down the lane must have been feeding her, I noticed one of the cottages is now empty so maybe she's been fed by the owners who have now moved. I just hope that she's not too tame and goes running up to anybody who comes along I'll see tomorrow night I don't really want to encourage her but she's very thin and tatty and if she's got cubs somewhere she'll need a little bit extra food. |

| | | Re: food for foxes I usually just buy some cheap tins of dog food & leave some out now & then in the evening. If I leave it out too early though the Magpies take the lot! |

| | | Re: food for foxes We feed foxes in our garden every night - and I can tell you that they eat most food that you put out for them. We put sausage, cat/dog food, an egg, - they love it if you put a small lump of cheese. - They have a very sweet tooth and love bread with jam on, - or cake/biscuits. And can I say for the record - we have 3 pet cats, - and the fox NEVER bothers them, - in fact - the fox is more nervous of the cats. |

| | | Re: food for foxes I'm so pleased you've said that as I also have 3 cats. I noticed a fox in my garden today and put some food out for it, and already I've been criticised for endangering my cats safety. I have no idea where this fox has come from. I've never seen it before but it's visited my garden 4 times today. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
