| | | Sabre Toothed Deer Sabre Toothed deer well to be exact a Chinese Water Deer. This was a skull I found during the winter. Whilst watching some Bedfordshire CWD's I came across some bits of a scavenged carcass and after a search of some time eventually found the remains of a CWD. With Dusk around the corner I chopped off the head and later passed it to the Mammal Recorder for displaying.
The skull really shows off the amazing tusks and although they are not particulalry aggresive I have heard stories of them killing dogs when cornered.

| | | Re: Sabre Toothed Deer Impressive and yes I seem to recall a story somewhere of CWD stag having a go at a dog that cornered it.

Although it does look a bit scary, especially seeing as how CWD are quite cute and fluffy...

| | | Re: Sabre Toothed Deer Fantastic skull Roy! Unbelievable tusks. One presumes they evolved for defense then. They look like they'd be pretty effective to me

| | | Re: Sabre Toothed Deer The skull is a great find, a friend and I saw a CWD in South Northants over the Winter so they are starting to move around a bit from their Beds stronghold.
Ours didn't have any tusks though so presumably a Doe.
Still nice to see though.
Well done again for finding the skull. |
