Red Squirrel - Ear problems ?

I took this shot of a red squirrel on Brownsea Island yesterday and didn't realise until i viewed it on the computer that there was something strange about his ears - although you cant see it in the shot the other ear is the same. Any ideas what caused it - he seemed to be quite happy although I was able to get quite close without spooking him, so maybe he could not hear me

I have photographed a number of Red Squirrel with either swollen ears or the lack of any tufts. I believe the problem is a common one and is caused by a mite. I seem to remeber it being referred to on an episode of Springwatch.

Not sure what has caused it but pretty sure it a hematoma—a firm, fluid-filled swelling, Perhaps brought about by the squirrel constantly scratching its ear due to a mite investation causing discomfort.

It could be caused by the Parapox Virus, which causes skin lesions and scabs with swelling.

Thanks Guys for the info. Do you think it causes the squirrel any problems - he seemed quite happy but i was able to get quite close without spooking him which made me think perhaps he could not hear
