| | | Red Squirrel - Ear problems ? I took this shot of a red squirrel on Brownsea Island yesterday and didn't realise until i viewed it on the computer that there was something strange about his ears - although you cant see it in the shot the other ear is the same. Any ideas what caused it - he seemed to be quite happy although I was able to get quite close without spooking him, so maybe he could not hear me

| | | Re: Red Squirrel - Ear problems ? Hi SKM
I have photographed a number of Red Squirrel with either swollen ears or the lack of any tufts. I believe the problem is a common one and is caused by a mite. I seem to remeber it being referred to on an episode of Springwatch.

| | | Re: Red Squirrel - Ear problems ? Not sure what has caused it but pretty sure it a hematoma—a firm, fluid-filled swelling, Perhaps brought about by the squirrel constantly scratching its ear due to a mite investation causing discomfort.

| | | Re: Red Squirrel - Ear problems ? It could be caused by the Parapox Virus, which causes skin lesions and scabs with swelling.
