| | | rabbit i have had to get my rabbit put down because of myxamatosis. was just wondering if i needed 2 get rid of her cage or not. please help |

| | | Re: rabbit I would as it can survive for some months I believe and hutch and bedding can be contaminated. Sorry about your pet if you do have another get it vaccinated to save having to go through this again.

| | | Re: rabbit A good clean out using hutch cleaner or a well diluted bleach mix should suffice but ensure it is dry before placing a rabbit in there.All future rabbits should be given the jab anyway which is most important.

| | | Re: rabbit Sorry to hear about your rabbit. I had a similar experience last year with a tame, escaped rabbit that had paired up with a wild one. They both spent time feeding in our garden than got struck with the dreaded disease and they both died along with several others around our small estate. I would clean or burn the hutch just to be sure, especially if you are getting another rabbit.

| | | Re: rabbit As long as you get rid of any bedding and check all the corners it should be fine. Its spread and carried by ticks, fleas and to a lesser extent mosquitoes. So if these are not present then it should be ok. Its not very common in winter either. |
