| | Hi and Red Deer in yorkshire First of all, Hi to everyone here, I just registered today and look forward to chatting with you all in the near future.
Second, where is the best place to see Red Deer in Yorkshire, apart from the deer herds at Studley Royal etc.
I was thinking more on the lines of "wild" deer - I know some are in the north york moors national park forests, but someone today said to me they can be seen in the dales as well, but couldn't say exactly where, anyone any ideas? |

| | | Re: Hi and Red Deer in yorkshire I spent the first half of my life in the Dales and never heard of red deer, though the smaller species were there. But I might be out of date.
You don't say whether you have in fact viewed them at Studley Royal. One point about it is that if you want a real close-up experience of the rut, it is the best place. In fact, when the stags start to bellow you might decide it's too close. |

I regularly stalk red deer on Exmoor, they are a magnificent animal!
The Exmoor deer are larger and generally in better fettle than their Scotish cousins, this is down to the enviroment and better grazing in the winter.
Apart from these two regions I'm not aware of any wild herds anywhere else, of course there will be escapees from time to time and maybe thats what's happened in your case.
The deer bred in captivity are the finest specimens of all in size, condition, and antlers (rights) but stalking deer in the wild is the greatest thrill.
The rutting season is the best time to stalk because the staggs are back with the hinds and thats where their interest lies, not in you, however it's also the most dangerous they will charge if they feel threatened.
Their bellowing (belling) is blood curdelling in the early morning mist, remember their nose and ears are better than their eyes, if you are spotted just stand still and with luck they will ignore you. |

| | | Re: Hi and Red Deer in yorkshire Hi and welcome,
I photograph about 4 times a year on the Yorkshire area and also have never seen any wild red, but there are a few other places I regularly go to photograph Wild Red Deer, which includes the already mentioned Scotland and Exmoor, also the Quantocks and New Forest.
As far as I`m aware theses are the only 4 wild deer herds left in Britain
Cheers

| | | Re: Hi and Red Deer in yorkshire There's wild red deer around Minsmere - difficult to see though. There's around fifteen on the reserve I was working adjacent to near Aldeborough and I was there all day for six months and never saw them, only their footprints! |
