| | | Re: Fox traps Before parting with your money on manufactured repellents, there are many claims that HUMAN MALE URINE repels badgers, as well as foxes! Most definitely worth a try IMO!
What kind of traps are being used? If they’re snare traps you could contact the RSPCA for advice because these traps cannot discriminate between species and can injure/kill animals which are protected under Schedule 5 and Schedule 6 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act lists fully protected mammals such as otter, pine marten, wild cat, red squirrel, water vole. Schedule 6 of the WCA lists mammals that must not be targeted using any forms of snares or trap likely to cause injury, such as badger, polecat, hedgehog. Badgers are also fully protected under The Protection of Badgers Act 1992.
Inspectorate surveys show that only a third of the animals caught in snares were actually target species. Cats were trapped in the largest numbers, but many badgers and dogs were also caught. Other snare victims include deer, hedgehogs and squirrels.
If they’re cage traps, according to the RSPCA, once an animal has been caught, it could be classed as captive and be protected under the Protection of Animals Act 1911 if suffering is caused.
At this time of year I would imagine a lot of vixens have already given birth and would have cubs waiting for her back in the den. Thereby to trap a lactating vixen would cause suffering to her cubs. That would be my perspective anyway!
Good luck with the territory marking, let us know how you get on! |

| | | Re: Fox traps I doubt the farmer will be so keen to handle/set them if you tell him you go round urinating on them !!
It's great to hear your anti-trapping views |

| | | Re: Fox traps You may want to take into account that the farmer has presumably set fox traps for a reason, possibly/probably that he sees the present number of foxes as a problem which may impact on his business. Since he has gone to the expense and trouble of setting traps that summation would seem quite likely
Whilst you may well not agree with that point of view, providing the traps are set on his land and not yours it is at best liable to be seen as less than neighbourly to interfere.
You may wish to consider the implications fully before you do so.

| | | Re: Fox traps Obviously more needs to be known and any action has to be legal naturally, I agree with you Mac. But, his trap also has to be legal.
If there are other animals around as per Hedgehoggy's reply, well then there are other concerns. Concerns I'm sure we'll all agree are of paramount importance if starts trapping innocent parties and actually injuring foxes. Quote:

Thanks | It's not actually on the farmer's land, and borders that of the OP's ( OP= Original Poster/thread starter) too. If the farmer can place traps on land that isn't his, then I'm sure the OP has every right to question the use/placement of said traps! Furthermore, the OP is asking of ways to deter the fox. He isn't suggesting removing them. His idea is humane and should get the desired result.
I think this thread is best kept to the original idea - it's not a debate - how to deter the fox, Humanely, as opposed to whether the OP is right to question it.

| | | Re: Fox traps It is perhaps worth bearing in mind that if the traps are on the farmers land and if they are legal, then interference with them by spraying or otherwise may amount to criminal damage!!!!!
.....and I'm sure no one would condone criminal activity
