Mysterious holes in my garden

Can anyone solve this problem for me, we have suddenly been finding holes that have been dug in the garden, they are round, only a few inches deep, don't go anywhere or have a nest of any sort in them, there are no "runs", footprints or droppings. It's definately not a cat, and I don't think it's a rat as they dont look big enough. We have been feeding the birds for years but have never seen anything like this before. Can anyone make a suggestion, I would be most grateful. Thanks Theadora

Do you have any rabbits around? if not it sounds like a rat or possibly wood mouse. Perhaps the ground is too hard/rock/sandy or to wet so they stop.

Bet It's those Cheeky little Monkeys the Squirrels, looking for the Nuts they buried before the Winter.

If the hole's quite small, maybe it was made by a hibernating bee digging its way out for spring.
