| | | First Bat Of 2009 We normally see bats in our garden from late Spring until Autumn however, I was surprised to see one flying around about twenty minutes ago.
I don't recall ever having seen a bat as early as this in the thirteen years we've lived here.
The temperature today reached around 10 degrees celsius but is noticeably cooler now.
Is it a good sign that the bats are flying so early this year or is it a sign that they didn't have enough food to see them through the Winter months?

| | | Re: First Bat Of 2009 I would imagine it was disturbed from its hibernation by something. Don't know what it will find to eat but I have noticed one or two insects today. |

| | | Re: First Bat Of 2009 From what I understand, bats do awaken from hibernation during the winter for short periods and torpor shortens throughout the time they hibernate. So perhaps this one is having a wingstretch before getting back to a good kip!
