| | | New Forest Sika Deer i realised a week or two ago that my port folio was missing any half descent pictures of sika deer,so with a little help from the local oracle i was directed to the best place (turns out to be only a 20 min drive from my house )
i did about 4 hours of walking and was rewarded by seeing 50+ sika deer in that time,
ive known of their whareabouts in surrounding counties but didnt realise they were right on my own doorstep!
it was a good morning out and one i will definatley doing again

| | | Re: New Forest Sika Deer Yeah lovely pics .
Been to the new forest with a friend and saw some deer not sure what type they were though, quick flash then they were gone. It was about 30mins drive from Bournemouth near that big main road that cuts through the forest. Other than that not sure where it was lol

Sika originate from Japan + mainland Asia, though most of those in UK are from Japan. They were introduced in the 19th century. Up to c200 animals in New Forest, though the largest population is to the west in Dorset where there are c2000 or so. |

| | | Re: New Forest Sika Deer Some very nice pics there! I have visited the sika deer at arne nature reserve a few times - they are almost ridiculously tame there - but have never seen one in the New Forest. There is something very exotic-looking about them, they're lovely creatures. I wonder if there's any risk of them hybridising with the red deer in the forest, as they have done in scotland? | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
