| | | Voles Looks like I've got voles in my garden, pinching bird and rabbit food.
Do I need to get rid of them? Do they pose the same problems as rats? HELP!

| | | Re: Voles Voles are alot less damaging than rats, they dont have half the risks, and are generally not a problem. So no I wouldnt worry about them. Infact if you have them hoovering up the spilt seeds your less likely to get rats. |

I dont know for sure but I don't think voles will do much damage.

BWD | I completely agree, get someone in who knows what they are doing, it is so easy to tell the difference between a rat and a vole. We have voles in our garden amongst the usual woodmouse, house mouse, shrews and brown rats. The voles have done no damage anywhere, they live outdoors (which is more than I can say for the rats at the moment!), and the only thing I can see is little burrow holes in grass banks.
If you are concerned, please do get someone who is able to tell the difference

I wasn't sure if the two fellows you referred to were porfessional exterminators or a partner and another. If they are professionals and they can't tell the difference in dropping etc sack them they are fleecing you. If they are friends or partners their reaction is unfortunatley all too common and they will need to appreciate that a vole offers very little risk compared with a Rat.
I would suggest you take a close look at the area and see if you can find some dropppings, Rats will be larger and scattered randomly, voles and I presume they are Bank Voles will be smaller and left in Latrines of about 6 upto 20.
If you know for definete they are Voles then great make the most of them, I saw my first bank Vole in my garden whilst completing my big garden watch and was over the moon.
good luck
Roy
