| | grave circling Saw a weird sight in a local, very quiet country graveyard today - a muddy track (approx 3m diameter) ciecling a grave stone. The track was pretty deep and banked at the edge suggesting quite a speedy run and many circuits. The tracks looked like a dog's footprint approx 1.5 inch long. The last interrment in that grave was 1991 so unlikely to be the deceased's pet. Anyone seen anything like this or know what may have been resposible? |

Possibly a fox?

| | | Re: grave circling In Wormley Wood today there was something similar around an Oak tree. I didn't think much about it until I saw this thread again. I don't have a shot. I think what I saw was made by a deer. There were droppings present too (not sure if they were deer).

Deer droppings are pretty distinctive. Have a look at the WAB reference pages. |

I am trying to work out the species of the deer we saw - from the size and general appearance and the shape of the tail (and it being Hertfordshire) probably Muntjac. Not Roe I don't think. So Muntjac do this circling thing too, I'm thinking.
These woods were absolutely fascinating to me - a real treasure. I will be going back I'll try and get more details and pictures if I can find that same tree.

'Roe rings' are part of the rutting ritual which is in late summer, so it's unlikely to be roe at this time of year.
Cheers

| | | Re: grave circling The ring that I saw had droppings that were not particularly fresh. In my mind it all fits.
(Although I cannot say whether the deer was chasing a female, or had just gone a bit "loopy") .
